Greetings and Welcome to Midway Alternative High School
and The Youth Center of the High Plains

We invite you to look over our web site and explore the programs of C.I.S.D.'s alternative school. There are two programs housed on the Midway campus. The Midway program is a school of choice and consists of alternative educational classes. The D.A.E.P. program consists of students placed for severe or persistent violation of the student code of conduct.

Midway is a school of choice.  It provides an opportunity for students to complete required course work necessary for high school graduation.  Students submit a completed application for consideration of admittance.  Enrollment is relatively small and the number of applicants could exceed the number of available spaces.  Midway is an extension of CISD's two other high schools.  Students completing all C.I.S.D. course requirements will graduate from Midway.  Graduating seniors have the opportunity to participate in Midway's fall graduation ceremony or the spring graduation ceremony.

Midway is currently taking applications for the 2016-2017 school year.  To be considered for Midway, you must meet the following requirments:

  • Be classified a junior or senior in the 2015-2016 school year
  • Currently attend either Canyon HS or Randall HS
  • Meet at least one at-risk indicator.
For detailed information on the interview process please click here During the interview.

Discipline Alternative Education Program (D.A.E.P.) classes are also located on the north side of the campus. Dress code for D.A.E.P. students will be in effect beginning the first day of classes. See the DAEP tab for the dress code guidelines and procedures.

Youth Center of the High Plains
The Youth Center of the High Plains is a Juvenile Residential Detention Center. The Center provides placement for juveniles of the panhandle of Texas with few placements from southern Texas.

Potter Co. Sheriff, Brian Thomas Shares Uplifting Personal Story

When you first look at 6'8" Sheriff Brian Thomas, you wouldn't believe that he once was (and still may be) the Amarillo record holder of making the most hushpuppies in a minute at Long John Silvers. Or that he spends at least "part of a day a week chasing cattle and horses" who have gotten out of their pens. Those stories along with his childhood experiences, high school life, and career journey were all shared with the students of Midway Alternative High School. In addition, Sheriff Thomas shared his belief with the students that nothing can hold them back and if they work hard at their dream, they can accomplish it. Midway Alternative High School would like to graciously thank Sheriff Thomas for sharing his story, his encouragement, and time with the students.
