CANYON HIGH SCHOOL

LIBRARY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

FOR TEACHERS

I.                  Opening/Closing

The library will open the third day of school for student use.

Teachers may check out equipment needed for class on the teacher workday prior to school beginning.

The library will remain open to classes and individual students until the last instructional day of the school year. All books will be due one week prior to the last day of school. Library equipment may be checked out through the last instructional day of the school year.

The library hours are as follows:

              Mon. – Fri.          7:00 am – 4:00 pm

II.               Library Use

Teachers may reserve the library in order to bring their classes in for research purposes, checking out books, etc… Individual students will still be allowed to come to the library during the reserved periods. It is the teacher’s responsibility to supervise the class while in the library.  The teacher is expected to remain in the library with the class for the entire period. It is requested that a copy of the policies and procedures be kept in the teacher’s substitute folder in the event a sub is needed.

Teachers are asked to limit the number of students being sent from their classroom to five. Teachers needing to send more than five students should contact the librarian to check on availability.

Organizations/Clubs wishing to use the library for meetings need to check with the librarian for availability. The sponsor of the organization will be responsible for supervising the students.

III.           Computers

Teachers needing computers for their classes have the following options:  the computer lab is located downstairs in room 1304 and there are two computer on wheel carts (COWS) with 28 - 30 laptops each.  PLEASE NOTE – the COWS cannot be reserved for use with a sub so if you are planning to be gone please reserve the lab for your students’ use.  All reservations for the computers are coordinated through the librarian so please contact her when you need computers for your whole class.

COWS need to be returned in check-out condition.  All laptops should be completely shut down and plugged into the power source. If you have questions or need training please see the librarian.

The downstairs computer lab is for CLASS USE ONLY. Because there will not be a dedicated staff member to monitor the lab, individual students needing to use computers should be sent to the library.

IV.           Audio/Visual Equipment

Audio/Visual equipment is available for teacher checkout only.  Equipment is due back to the library at the end of the requested time to ensure that the equipment is available to all teachers.  If further time is needed please check with the librarian to make sure the equipment is not reserved for someone else.  The teacher should return the equipment or make arrangements for a library aide to pick it up.  Please report any defects with the equipment to the librarian.

The following A/V items are available in the CHS library:

TVs                                    DVD players

VCRs                                  Blu-Ray Disc player

V.               Check-out of Materials

Teachers may check out an unlimited number of books (including fiction, non-fiction, and reference books) for instructional or personal use for a period of three weeks.  Checking books out in the teacher’s name for students is highly discouraged.  Magazines are available to teachers for a period of two days.  Although there is no late fee assessed for teachers, it is requested that teachers promptly return books upon completion of assignments.  Teachers will be held responsible for any books or equipment that is lost or damaged beyond repair and will need to pay for those items.

A professional library is available to teachers and has books on numerous subjects including classroom management, teaching techniques, encouragement, etc…  Please take a few minutes to come have a look!

VI.           Copy Machine

A copy machine in the library is provided for limited student use.  Teachers needing copies for classroom use need to take care of that with the copiers in the teachers lounge

VII.        Laminator

The library staff is responsible for all laminating.  Laminating will be done three times a week on Mon., Wed. & Fri.  Please have materials needing to be laminated to the librarian by 4:00 p.m. on the day prior to laminating day.
