Welcome to Canyon ISD’s Special Services – Section 504 department. We look forward to working with you and your student to ensure your student’s needs are met.

Section 504 is a federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities which receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Section 504 provides: “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States…shall solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance…” 29 U.S.C. Sec. 794

The Section 504 regulation requires a school district to provide a “free appropriate public education” (FAPE) to each qualified student with a disability who is in the school district’s jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability. FAPE consists of the provision of regular or special education and related aids and services designed to meet the student’s individual needs.

Under Section 504 guidelines, a student with a disability (which is defined as a student with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, or a student with a record of such a disability [such as but not limited to diabetes, asthma, motor impairments, ADHD, hearing impairments, etc.]) may be eligible for a Section 504 Plan.

Canyon ISD evaluates each student’s individual needs when determining if a Section 504 plan is appropriate; parents and guardians are critical partners in determining whether a Section 504 plan is needed.

If you are interested in receiving more information about Section 504, please contact your campus coordinator for Section 504 or the Special Services department at 806-677-2631.
