Canyon ISD Connect | Why the Cost of Running Schools Continues to Rise
Understanding how public schools are funded can feel complicated, but these decisions directly impact classrooms, staffing and the opportunities available to students. As part of Canyon ISD Connect, we’re sharing a monthly look at how school funding works and how thoughtful financial planning supports strong schools and a strong community.
Why the Cost of Running Schools Continues to Rise
Understanding school funding is only part of the picture. It’s also important to understand what it takes to operate schools each day.
Like families and businesses, school districts experience rising costs over time. Even without adding new programs, the day-to-day cost of running schools continues to increase.
Inflation affects nearly every part of school operations. Districts must manage rising costs in areas such as:
- Utilities and energy
- Transportation and fuel
- Insurance and employee benefits
- Special education services
- State-mandated safety and security requirements
For example, transportation costs fluctuate with fuel prices, and utility bills rise as energy rates increase, and insurance premiums adjust based on broader market trends. Schools must also meet evolving state safety standards, which can require additional training, equipment and facility upgrades.
While the state has approved teacher pay increases in recent years, those increases did not include additional funding to offset rising operational costs across all areas of a district. As a result, districts must absorb many of these increases within their existing funding.
It’s important to note that rising expenses do not necessarily mean expanded services or new programs. In many cases, they reflect the growing cost of maintaining the high-quality instruction and opportunities students already receive.
How Canyon ISD Is Planning Ahead
While these challenges are not unique to Canyon ISD, our district is taking a proactive and thoughtful approach to planning for the future—always with students at the center of every decision.
One key factor in financial stability is student attendance. In Texas, school funding is based on average daily attendance, not enrollment. Canyon ISD has seen steady improvement in attendance, with current rates around 94.9%, reflecting continued recovery following the pandemic. Consistent attendance helps ensure resources remain available to support classrooms, staff and student programs.
Canyon ISD is also committed to transparent and proactive financial planning. Throughout the year, the Board of Trustees has held a series of budget workshops to review financial data, monitor trends and plan for both short-term needs and long-term sustainability. These conversations help ensure decisions are made thoughtfully and with a clear understanding of the district’s financial outlook.
District leaders are also closely monitoring factors that may impact future funding, including potential changes at the state level. While some uncertainties remain, planning efforts are focused on staying prepared, responsive and student-centered.
A Continued Focus on Students
Across Texas, school districts are navigating similar financial pressures. At Canyon ISD, the focus remains clear—protecting classroom instruction, supporting staff and ensuring students have access to meaningful opportunities.
Strong schools do more than educate students—they help build strong communities. Canyon ISD remains committed to transparency, responsible stewardship and ensuring our schools continue to serve students and families with excellence.
